Neighbors say gunfire sent children scrambling for cover
People who live near the shooting described a chaotic scene as shots rang out before sunrise. One resident said he heard the gunfire and then saw two girls who had been waiting for the bus hiding behind his truck.
Gregory Smith said the children were shaken by what they had just experienced. He said his own son normally walks to school, but did not do so Monday because of the danger.
Smith later drove his son to school after the area began to clear. He said the boy remained upset after the shooting, and he tried to reassure him in the moment.
