CLOVIS, NM — Clovis police say two people were arrested after an incident involving aggravated assault and custodial interference near the 2200 block of Whippoorwill Way. Officers say the case began when dispatch received an emergency call on Sept. 17 at about 2:41 p.m. about the kidnapping of a 3-year-old child and a 5-year-old child.
The caller, identified by police as the children’s father, reported that the children’s mother’s significant other had pointed a blue-colored pistol at his head. Police later located the vehicle described in the call and stopped it quickly. The children were not hurt.
Police say the children were taken by their mother and her partner
According to Clovis police, the children were taken from the scene by their mother, Gabrielle Gauna, 24, and her significant other, Edward Crazyhorse Alonzo, 30. Police say the pair left in a vehicle, and dispatch received the vehicle information from the father.
Within moments, officers found the vehicle and made a high-risk stop. Police said both Gauna and Alonzo were arrested without incident. The children were recovered unharmed, ending what officers described as a fast-moving response to a serious domestic-related call.
Search warrant leads officers to a pistol with a turquoise lower receiver
After the arrests, investigators executed a search warrant on the vehicle. Police say they recovered a pistol with a turquoise lower receiver during that search.
The firearm recovery added another layer to the case, which already included allegations of custodial interference and aggravated assault. Police did not say in the release whether the weapon was loaded or whether it had been used to threaten anyone beyond the father’s initial account.
Alonzo faces firearm and assault-related charges after the arrest
Edward Crazyhorse Alonzo was booked on charges of custodial interference, aggravated assault and felon in possession of a firearm. Gabrielle Gauna was arrested on charges of custodial interference and conspiracy to commit aggravated assault.
Both were transported to the Curry County Adult Detention Center. The police department’s account indicates the case remained active after the arrests, with investigators continuing to process the scene and the vehicle involved in the incident.
How officers say the response unfolded in minutes
Police said the call came in shortly after 2:41 p.m., and the vehicle was located within moments. That quick sequence allowed officers to stop the car before the situation escalated further.
Clovis police said the children were unharmed throughout the incident. The department did not release additional details about what led up to the confrontation near Whippoorwill Way or about the family relationship beyond what was included in the arrest information.
