On Friday, March 2, the band traveled to Lake Mary High School to perform at their annual District 6 Music Performance Assessment, earning straight Superior ratings.

When the band arrived, they went straight to the warm up room where they tuned their instruments and practiced. They then went to the stage and performed three songs. After, they had to sight read music and perform it.

This event is not to be confused with a competition. It was an assessment that was judged by a panel of three judges and each band received an independent score of a Poor, Fair, Good, Excellent or Superior. Both Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble received the highest scoring, and the school was one of the two in the county to earn Straight Superiors.

“It was amazing. I was on the bus waiting to get our scores, and then Mr. K announced it,” junior Emma Register said. “I was so shocked and happy.”

The band has been perfecting the music since December, rehearsing not only in class but after school as well. The music performed was more difficult literature compared to the other pieces that the band has worked on in the school year.

Our goal is always to give people the opportunity to forget about other scenarios that may be going on in their lives and give them a time to just listen and enjoy,” band director Brad Kuperman said. “I believe that these ensembles really achieved that this past weekend.”
