This Thursday, Oct. 27, the yearbook and newspaper staffs will hold a spirit night at Moe’s Southwest Grill on Alafaya from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. When customers present a printed version of the flyer shown below, 25% of their purchase will go toward the journalism department.

While the journalism staffs usually generate their funds through ad sales, the revenues from the spirit night will be dedicated to lessening the costs of attending the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Spring Conference March 15-17.

The convention takes place at Columbia University in New York. High school journalists and advisers are given the opportunity to choose to sit in on more than 350 informational sessions and socialize with other student journalists, while also exploring the city.

“We get to learn about what it is we do, but we also get to experience [New York City], which is something really cool that some people on staff have never gotten to experience before,” BluePrint editor-in-chief Jeannie Williams said.

Williams and Fusion editor-in-chief Caitlyn Patel were the first to suggest the possibility of the staffs attending the convention.

“When you go to [journalism conventions], you learn a lot of things that not only apply to journalism realms, but also just to life in general,” Patel said. “I once took a class on race relations, and that was one of the best classes I’ve ever had, even though it was only an hour long.”

Physical copies of flyers will be distributed through English classes.
