There is a quote from Cristopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight that says, “He’s the hero that Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs.” Whenever I hear this quote, I cannot help but apply this to presidential candidate Donald Trump. It is no secret that Trump has been outspoken during his campaign. He is making headlines every week about a rowdy rally or controversial statement. It has gotten to the point where there are political television ads that state that Trump is ‘too dangerous’ for office.

Even the media has seemed to turn on the real estate mogul ever since he became the presumptive Republican nominee. Once portrayed as an ‘Anti-Establishment’ candidate with an outspoken nature, he is now portrayed as a reckless, sexist and racist man who does not deserve the office of president.

Yes, Trump can be a bit reckless when he speaks and goes off-script, but you have to remember, he isn’t a politician. If Trump is elected, he would be the first president in American history to not have prior political or military experience.

However, just because Trump is not a politician, does not mean he should not at least learn from them. If Trump is able to refine his speaking so he can be more clear and concise in expressing himself, then he would not garner as much criticism as he is now.

Trump has made offensive remarks about Muslims, Mexicans, women and people with disabilities, some of which kind of ticked me off as well, but what I always remember two things when I hear remarks like this. First, it is immoral to offend someone, but sometimes you have compromise morality in order to accomplish the task at hand, and second, this is not a personality contest. This is a contest that determines the fate of our country for at least the next four years, maybe eight. We cannot allow our feelings to get in the way.

As for Trump’s relationship with the media, he has spent a lot of time lately talking with Fox News, king of conservative news stations. Most other media has seemingly turned on Trump, painting him as reckless, racist, sexist and unpredictable. If most television media, besides Fox, is prepared to make rapid fire accusations about himself and his policies, then what is the point of talking to them?

Yes, Trump should talk to all media, but it is difficult to blame him for spending more time with the one network who will not call him racist or sexist after every rally or speech.

America’s government was made by the people, for the people, and Trump epitomizes this statement. He is not some boring politician or disciplined military general. However, Trump might do well to learn from both of these types of people, but that does not mean he has to become them. Ronald Reagan was an actor before he became president, one of this country’s greatest at that, so why can’t a successful businessman do the same?

I am not saying that Donald Trump will be remembered as the best president in U.S. history. I am not saying that Donald Trump will be remembered as a revolutionary president. I am not even saying that Donald Trump will be remembered as a good president. However, this election is not about how our future president will be remembered, it is about what we can do here and now.

All of Trump’s faults and stumbles do not make him a president America deserves, but he has also shown his ability to get things done, listen to the people that this government was made for, and make America great again. This does not make Donald Trump the president America deserves, but it does make him the one it needs.
