The last time the varsity football team defeated Oviedo was on Oct. 23, 2010, when current NFL quarterback Jeff Driskel was on the team. That changed last night.

On Friday, Sept. 9, the team defeated the Lions 17-10, improving to 2-0 in the regular season. The team was led by running back Tavis Thompson, who scored both touchdowns.

“It meant a lot to know that we changed history and proved everyone who doesn’t or didn’t believe in us wrong,” Thompson said. “This was only the second game, so we’re looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Although this was the first time in head coach Phil Ziglar’s tenure that the team defeated Oviedo, he still stressed that the goal is to repeat as District 7 champions.

“I know when I first got here that this game was going to bring the most excitement, but I care more about championships,” Ziglar said. “Whether we defeated Oviedo or not, I knew that this game was not going to define our season.”

For senior cornerback Matt Lipari, who has been on the team since his sophomore year, this win gives him confidence heading into the rest of the season.

“I just didn’t want to repeat the last two years, where we were up at halftime and let [Oviedo] comeback,” Lipari said. “We were making sure that we finished this game and expect another district championship this year.”

The team will host Lake Minneola next Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m. They beat the team last year, 28-21, the week after the Oviedo loss.

“Our mindset has always been to expect to win,” Ziglar said. “With this win now, the [team] has to realize that we need to shift our focus over to the district games that count, and, Lake Minneola will be our first test.”
