On Thursday, Dec. 17, the boys varsity basketball team beat Liberty in their first home game of the season, 63-29. The team is now 5-5.

Guard Alex Keel led the team with 24 points, while guard Vecarie Pettis finished with 12 points and center Zen Goodridge with 8 points. The team was hopeful going into the game and it showed, as the team had doubled Liberty’s point total by the third quarter. The team finished the game with their most assists of the season.

“We felt confident because we have worked hard and hard work usually translates to playing well,” Goodridge said.

This was the team’s first matchup again Liberty since they switched to the 7A division. This marks Liberty’s tenth straight loss, dropping their record to 2-11.

“There was great defense by our guards, which put lots of pressure on their team,” head coach Josh Kohn said.

Prior to the game against Liberty, the team beat St. Cloud 63-27 on Wednesday, Dec. 16 with Pettis leading with 16 points. This has been their biggest win so far this season.

Although the team has won two straight games, Kohn knows that everyone is still trying to learn their roles and that the team still needs work.

“Our offense is above average right now,” Kohn said. “The boys still need to play better together.”

The next game of the season will be Friday, Dec. 18 at Lake Mary at 7:30 p.m. Last season, the team lost 49-40 against Lake Mary and hopes to avenge that loss this year.
