John Scarelli wins the face-off against Oviedo. The boys’ varsity lacrosse team won 8-7 over Oviedo.

After a penalty late in the game, the boys varsity lacrosse team was a man-down in the final minute. The team was up by one, 8-7, and Oviedo had possession. The defense was ready to put up a fight and stop the goal. Oviedo took a shot and missed, leading to the team’s first win over Oviedo in two years.

“Beating Oviedo felt great, it was a big step up from last year,” attacker Landon McLaughlin said. “A lot of our motivation to get better came from this game.”

McLaughlin had two goals, captain John Mediavilla had four and middie John Scarelli had two.

As well as staying ahead of Oviedo the whole game, the team was a dominant force on the face-off. Scarelli had nine wins from the faceoff out of the 15 he took.

To get ready for Oviedo, the team practiced strategies and plays they had not used against any other team, hoping to catch Oviedo by surprise.

“We made a specific game plan geared towards their team to stop them on defense. We also made a plan on how to beat their zone defense and how to take advantage of certain situations,” goalie Caleb Foshee said.

Even though the team had a good game, there are still a couple of things that they need to work on to go far this season, according to McLaughlin.

“Settling the ball and valuing our possessions will help us create fewer turnovers,” McLaughlin said. “We also had 15 minutes in penalty time and we were a man down a lot. It would be helpful if we had all of our players on the field most of the time.”

The reason the team feels that they beat Oviedo is because they put in enough practice and teamwork.

“Everyone did their assignment to the best of their ability and it pays off when we all band together and put in the work,” captain Connor McLaughlin said.

The boys’ next game is Wednesday against Winter Springs at 7. p.m. Tickets can be found on gofan.com.
