Defensive midfield Megan O’Donnell dribbles the ball down the field. The girls’ varsity soccer team tied against Oviedo.

The girls varsity soccer team had not won against Oviedo in six years. They had not even scored a single goal. When defensive midfielder Megan O’Donnell scored with less than a minute to go on Friday, the team earned a 3-3 tie and a big shift in perception.

O’Donnell knew that if she could get a goal she could tie the score. She then kicked the ball as hard as possible and made the final goal.

“Everything felt so electric and the crowd went wild,” O’Donnell said.

The game was back and forth between who scored goals the whole time. Left-wing Mallory Precord scored the first goal tying Oviedo 1-1. Then center midfielder Reagan Fitzgerald scored the second goal making the score 2-2. The last goal was scored by O’Donnell who tied up the game 3-3.

The team sees this tie as very different from past games and a huge improvement for them.

“We had a chance to compete and win against them,” Fitzgerald said. “In the past, there was no shot of coming close to winning but this year we had the right players and were able to put up a good fight against Oviedo.”

The team realized it was important to have a good mindset coming into the game to have a chance of playing well against Oviedo after all the years of losing to them.

“We talked about playing the game for ourselves and not for other people,” striker Raegen Varvarigos said. “We went into that game knowing we could put up a fight.”

Although the score shows a tie, the girls believed overall that they played one of their best games this season.

“I do not think there is anything different we could have done,” goalie Arianna Rosenblum said. “We played one of our best games and we were the better team.”

The team hopes to build on this and go far in districts and regionals. The next game is at Flagler Palm Coast on Jan. 18 at 7:30. Tickets can be found on gofan.com.
