Freshman Owen Amirault warms up at districts on Oct. 12.

On Oct. 12, the boys golf team secured a 5-3 season, a third place finish in the SAC conference and landed fourth in districts. Despite a disappointing end to the season, it still held many highlights.

Senior Charles Nguyen led the team in birdies, greens in regulation and overall score

“I’m proud of my personal performance this season,” Ngyuen said. “I would say my nine hole scoring was a highlight because I averaged at around even par for those matches.”

Junior Ethan Sweat echoes this sentiment, expressing pride, but also disappointment in regards to the teams finish after higher expectations.

“It really was a [tough] match,” Sweat said. “A couple of kids on the team played rough but me and Anthony Johnson really carried the team that day, securing fourth place.”

Sweat and the remainder of the teammates agree that the district match held at Cypress Head golf course could have gone much differently.

“My biggest disappointment was definitely the bad course management at districts,” Nguyen said. “It cost me over five shots and I know that didn’t help in regards to our advancement to regionals.”

Nguyen shot an uncharacteristic 81 at districts, followed by junior Anthony Johnson with 84, junior Owen Amirault with 88 and freshman Carson Turner with 91. Overall, the team scored a 344 at the district tournament.

While the season had its ups and downs, its sudden end proved to be a learning experience for those looking to further their golf career.

Nguyen specifically acknowledges his personal improvements this season and states that the skills he adapted will help him further his amateur golf career.

“Just learning how to trust my game plan and accepting that I cannot pull off every shot all the time was key,” Nguyen said. “Overall, I’d say we all grew as a team over the course of this season, no matter the end result.”
