Unveiling a new scoreboard for the ceremony, the 2019 NCAA signing students were celebrated on Nov. 27 in the auditorium. Athletic director Jay Getty started the ceremony with a speech urging students to work hard during their college careers and to never give up. After, students were able to take pictures with friends and family in front of the scoreboard displaying their name and college.

NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) signing is a commitment to attend a college after being recruited by a scout for their sports team. Senior Robert Post who will attend Embry Riddle for baseball, describes being accepted as a feeling of relief.

“When I committed, I was relieved that I knew I was going to go to a good school for both athletics and academics,” Post said.

While some can pinpoint their exact feelings, others can not specify an exact sentiment. Senior Leandra Mangual’s dream of being recruited has become a reality; she had trouble explaining what it meant.

“Being recruited by Mizzou is an indescribable feeling. [Committing there] was something I have wanted my whole life and I have been working towards it since I was little,” Mangual said.

Students are committed to their colleges for many reasons, not just for sports. Academics are a top priority in colleges for most.  Post found Embry Riddle appealing due to its education opportunities, as well as meeting new people. Others were interested in the feel of campus and the location.  Senior Joslin Hanbury, a Duquesne University commit, looks forward to college life in Pittsburgh.

“I felt Duquesne had the perfect mix between college life and city life,” Hanbury said.

With the prospect of being on a college team, athletes are further motivated to succeed. After meeting her new team, Mangual is glad to have welcoming members to support her. Post feels similarly, adding that he is excited to have a chance at certain competitions.

“I’m looking forward to going for a national championship and meeting some new teammates that will soon become friends for a lifetime,” Post said.
